Rick and Morty quiz answers and explanations

Every question from the quiz above with its correct answer, the story behind it, and where the fact comes from.

  1. Rick and Morty grew out of a short parodying which film?

Answer: Back to the Future. In 2006 Justin Roiland made The Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti for Channel 101, a crude parody of Doc Brown and Marty McFly. The audience loved it, he kept making shorts, and years later the pair were renamed Rick and Morty when Dan Harmon asked him for an animated series idea.

  2. What is Rick's home universe called?

Answer: Dimension C-137. The original Rick calls himself "Rick Sanchez of Earth Dimension C-137", but the label does not cover the rest of the family. In season one's "Rick Potion #9" he and Morty abandon a ruined world and move into another dimension, leaving the original Summer, Beth and Jerry behind.

  3. What is Beth Smith's job?

Answer: Horse surgeon. Beth is the level-headed, assertive force in the house, but she is self-conscious about her job as a horse surgeon. She is unhappy in her marriage to Jerry, who resents Rick's influence over the family.

  4. Which McDonald's product came back because of the show?

Answer: Szechuan Sauce. Rick obsesses over the long-gone sauce in the season three premiere, "The Rickshank Rickdemption". After fan demand, McDonald's brought it back to all stores on 26 February 2018, nearly twenty years after its original run, and again as an app exclusive in 2022.

  5. On which programming block does the show air?

Answer: Adult Swim. Adult Swim, Cartoon Network's night-time block, approached Harmon in 2012 looking for a prime-time hit, and picked up the pilot that October as one of its first prime-time originals. The first season premiered in December 2013 with eleven episodes, including the pilot.

  6. Whose idea was it to make Rick Morty's grandfather?

Answer: Adult Swim executive Nick Weidenfeld. Roiland first wanted a single eleven-minute segment, but Adult Swim pushed for a half-hour show. Harmon felt the way to stretch it was to build a family around the two characters, and development executive Weidenfeld suggested making Rick the grandfather.

  7. How long did it take Harmon and Roiland to write the first draft of the pilot?

Answer: Six hours. They sold the pilot and wrote it the same day, sitting cross-legged with laptops on the floor of Harmon's unfurnished Community office on the Paramount lot. Roiland stopped Harmon going home, warning that otherwise it might take them three months.

  8. Which structure do many episodes follow?

Answer: Dan Harmon's story circle. Harmon's story circle is based largely on Joseph Campbell's monomyth, the Hero's Journey. In Rick and Morty's two-act version the act break falls after the "Meeting with the Goddess" stage rather than at "Atonement with the Father".

  9. Who took over the voices of Rick and Morty from season seven?

Answer: Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden. Adult Swim cut ties with Justin Roiland in January 2023 after he was charged with domestic battery, charges that were later dropped for insufficient evidence. The new voices were heard in the trailer but only named when season seven premiered on 15 October 2023.

  10. How did the season three premiere first reach viewers?

Answer: It aired unannounced on April Fools' Day. "The Rickshank Rickdemption" was dropped without warning on 1 April 2017 as an Adult Swim prank, and the rest of the season only started almost four months later. Planned for fourteen episodes, the season ended up with ten, partly because of Harmon's perfectionism.

  11. Where does the Smith family live?

Answer: A suburb outside Seattle. The family, Jerry, Beth, Summer, Morty and Beth's father Rick, lives in suburban Washington state and travels to other planets by portal and Rick's flying saucer. Morty is 14 and Summer is 17, the more conventional teenager worried about her status.

  12. How many new episodes did Adult Swim order in its 2018 long-term deal?

Answer: 70. After season three the creators wanted security so they could focus on the show and cut the gaps between seasons. The May 2018 deal ordered 70 episodes over an unspecified number of seasons; by 2024 the series was renewed through season twelve.

  13. Dan Harmon described Rick and Morty as a cross between which two shows?

Answer: The Simpsons and Futurama. Harmon said it balances family life with heavy science fiction, like Matt Groening's two shows combined. He also cited British influences such as The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Doctor Who: viewers see through Morty's eyes, as the companion, while idolising the Doctor-like Rick.

  14. Which season one episode was written second but animated as the fifth?

Answer: Rick Potion #9. Episodes were sometimes written out of order in the first season, and this one made more sense later in the run because it ends with Rick and Morty moving to a new dimension. Roiland has said the show deliberately avoids strict continuity and revisiting old tropes as fan service.

  15. In which two years did Rick and Morty win the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program?

Answer: 2018 and 2020. The show has been nominated three times and won twice, in 2018 and 2020. It has also won two Annie Awards, and at times it was the most-watched TV comedy among 18 to 24 year olds; season three finished with the best ratings in Adult Swim history.

  16. Which software is the show animated in?

Answer: Toon Boom Harmony. The vector-based 2D puppet software is cheaper than traditional hand-drawn animation. Post-production uses After Effects and backgrounds are painted in Photoshop. Bardel Entertainment in Vancouver animated the first eight seasons, with Mercury Filmworks in Ottawa taking over from season nine.

  17. Which cartoon inspired the characters' small "w-shaped" mouths?

Answer: The Ren & Stimpy Show. Roiland said the expression is a reference to one Ren often makes. He also acknowledged a debt to The Simpsons, and art director Jeffrey Thompson explained that characters get odd or asymmetrical features so they never look "too normal" for the show's universe.

  18. In which 2021 film do Rick and Morty make a cameo?

Answer: Space Jam: A New Legacy. They claim to have experimented on the Tasmanian Devil, are disgusted by the results and drop him back onto LeBron James and the Looney Tunes' rocket. Rick and Morty also appeared in a couch gag in The Simpsons episode "Mathlete's Feat", where Rick crash-lands into the living room.

  19. At which short-film festival did Harmon and Roiland meet?

Answer: Channel 101. Channel 101 is a monthly non-profit short-film festival in Los Angeles co-founded by Harmon, where the audience votes on which pilots continue. Roiland started submitting "sick and twisted" shorts there in 2004, and Harmon liked his humour enough to start collaborating.

  20. What was the first season's TV rating, which surprised the staff?

Answer: TV-14. Adult Swim gave season one a tamer-than-usual TV-14 rating because it was about to compete in prime time with major programmes, and the staff were initially reluctant. Many later episodes were rated TV-MA instead.

About the Rick and Morty quiz

Rick and Morty started as a crude parody short and became one of Adult Swim's biggest shows, so its history is as strange as its plots. A first draft written in six hours, an episode structure borrowed from screenwriting theory, a surprise April Fools' premiere, a McDonald's sauce brought back by fan demand and a full voice recast. Those stories test fans better than asking which dimension Rick is from.

Questions cover the family and the multiverse — Rick's gadgets and portal gun, the Citadel of Ricks, recurring characters like Mr. Meeseeks, and the show's most talked-about episodes.

What this Rick and Morty quiz covers

The quiz covers the Smith family and the multiverse, but most of it is about the show itself: the Back to the Future parody it started as, the six-hour pilot, the story circle, the April Fools' premiere, the voice recast, the Szechuan Sauce saga and the studios and software behind the animation. Each answer below explains the story behind it and links to the source.

Rick and Morty quiz — frequently asked questions

Do I need to have seen every season?

No. Only a few questions are about plot. Most cover how the show was created, written, animated and cast.

Is the multiverse lore important?

Barely. One question is about Rick's home universe; you do not need to follow the show's continuity to answer the rest.

Does it cover the voice recast?

Yes. One question asks who took over the voices from season seven, and the explanation says why.
