One Piece quiz answers and explanations

Every question from the quiz above with its correct answer, the story behind it, and where the fact comes from.

  1. Who created One Piece?

Answer: Eiichiro Oda. Oda has written and drawn the manga in Weekly Shōnen Jump since 22 July 1997. He draws everything that moves himself and leaves backgrounds to his staff, working from about five in the morning until two the next morning with short breaks only for meals.

  2. Which Devil Fruit turned Luffy's body to rubber?

Answer: The Gum-Gum Fruit. Oda based Devil Fruits on the gadgets in Doraemon, reflecting his own daily life and fantasies, and said the Gum-Gum Fruit was inspired by his laziness. Every Devil Fruit user loses the ability to swim, which makes a pirate's life rather risky.

  3. Which cartoon first made Oda want to draw a pirate manga?

Answer: Vicky the Viking. He watched the animated series as a child. Reading pirate biographies later led him to borrow traits from real pirates, and his biggest influence overall is Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball, one of his favourite manga.

  4. Who plays Luffy in Netflix's live-action series?

Answer: Iñaki Godoy. The series was codenamed Project Roger and premiered on 31 August 2023 to positive reviews from fans and critics, with Oda as an executive producer. Mackenyu plays Zoro, Emily Rudd Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson Usopp and Taz Skylar Sanji.

  5. How many copies of the manga were in circulation by March 2026?

Answer: Over 600 million. That makes it the best-selling manga series ever and the best-selling comic series in volume format. It set the Guinness World Record for most copies published of a comic series by a single author in 2015 and updated it in 2022.

  6. What were Oda's two 1996 one-shots that led to One Piece called?

Answer: Romance Dawn. Both featured Luffy, and the title was later reused for the first chapter and volume. Oda wrote them while working as an assistant to Nobuhiro Watsuki. The first appeared in Akamaru Jump in August 1996 and the second in Weekly Shōnen Jump that September.

  7. How many times did Weekly Shōnen Jump reject One Piece before agreeing to publish it?

Answer: Three. Original editor Takanori Asada revealed this. Editor-in-chief Kazuhiko Torishima thought it "incomplete" and the team argued for two hours, but he approved it because Asada was so "annoyingly earnest" that a colleague warned rejection would crush them both.

  8. Marshall D. Teach is named after which real pirate?

Answer: Edward "Blackbeard" Teach. Reading pirate biographies led Oda to give many characters traits of real pirates. The series also blurs who counts as a pirate: some are selfish criminals, others are simply people who refuse to submit to the authoritarian World Government.

  9. Zoro's move "Onigiri" is written as "demon cut" but sounds like which food?

Answer: Rice ball. Several of Zoro's techniques look fearsome on the page but sound like foods when read aloud. A Toei animation director said dropping these kanji jokes from the anime "might have cut down the laughs by about half".

  10. How long did Oda originally plan One Piece to run?

Answer: Five years. He said in 2006 he had already planned the ending but enjoyed the story too much to finish it so soon. In 2016 he estimated it was 65 percent done, and in 2019 he said he would change the ending if fans managed to predict it.

  11. Which volume holds the record for the highest initial print run?

Answer: Volume 67. It had a first printing of 4.05 million copies in 2012. Volume 60 was the first book to sell over two million copies in its opening week in Oricon's rankings. One Piece is the only manga to keep initial prints above 3 million for more than ten years.

  12. In March 2026, what did Oda do with his written statement about the truth of the treasure?

Answer: Locked it in a box and sent it to the bottom of the ocean. It will stay there until the story ends, although some fans began planning to retrieve it early. Oda has said the One Piece is a real physical object and that a Wizard of Oz-style "the journey was the treasure" ending is a cliché he wants to avoid.

  13. Which other manga creator collaborated with Oda on the crossover Cross Epoch?

Answer: Akira Toriyama. The one-shot combining One Piece and Dragon Ball appeared in Weekly Shōnen Jump in December 2006. Oda also made a crossover with Toriko's creator, Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro, called Taste of the Devil Fruit, in 2011.

  14. Which Greek athlete struck Luffy's "Gear Second" pose before winning Olympic gold in Tokyo?

  15. For how long was One Piece Japan's best-selling manga each year without a break?

Answer: 11 years (2008–2018). It slipped to second in 2019 but stayed the best-selling manga by volume. Since Oricon's chart began in 2008, One Piece volumes have ranked first in its weekly comic chart every year, and every one of the first 105 volumes sold over a million copies.

  17. A fruit-fly gene that splits into several parts was named partly after which character?

Answer: Buggy. The gene, Baramicin, encodes a protein that is split into multiple pieces, and its name takes partial inspiration from Buggy. Scientists have also named an amoeba genus Alabasta, a spider after Inazuma and in 2026 a beetle genus Luffy for its stretched-out shape.

About the One Piece quiz

One Piece has run for nearly thirty years, so its trivia covers both a huge story and a long history. Oda first planned it to last five years. Jump rejected it several times, the Devil Fruits started with Doraemon, and the series later turned up at the Olympics, in genetics and on protest flags. Those connections to the real world make a better test than listing the Straw Hats' bounties.

Questions cover the Straw Hat crew — Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Sanji and the rest — plus Devil Fruit powers, the seas of the Grand Line, and the many allies and enemies met along the way.

What this One Piece quiz covers

The quiz covers Luffy and the Straw Hats, but most questions are about the real story of One Piece: the cartoon and the real pirates that inspired Oda, the three rejections, the Doraemon idea behind Devil Fruits, the food puns, the five-year plan that became decades, the sales records, the live-action and anime remakes and the series' impact far outside manga. Each answer below explains the story behind it and links to the source.
