Minecraft quiz answers and explanations

Every question from the quiz above with its correct answer, the story behind it, and where the fact comes from.

  1. Who originally created Minecraft?

Answer: Markus "Notch" Persson. Persson made browser games at King and prototyped his own games in his spare time, sharing them on the TIGSource indie forums. The first public alpha appeared there on 17 May 2009, and the full release followed on 18 November 2011.

  2. How much did Microsoft pay for Mojang and Minecraft in 2014?

Answer: $2.5 billion. Persson had suggested on Twitter that a company buy his stake after a backlash over enforcing the game's licence rules on paid servers. Microsoft called Mojang's CEO soon after, and Activision Blizzard and EA also showed interest. The deal made Persson a billionaire.

  3. Which musician created Minecraft's original music and sound effects?

Answer: C418. C418 is the German musician Daniel Rosenfeld. He made the music deliberately repetitive to help players relax or concentrate, and released two albums, Volume Alpha in 2011 and Volume Beta in 2013. Lena Raine became the main composer from the 2020 Nether Update.

  4. How long is one full Minecraft day and night cycle in real time?

Answer: 20 minutes. Hostile mobs such as zombies, skeletons and spiders spawn at night or in dark places, so survival players need shelter. Creepers, which sneak up and explode, and teleporting endermen are creatures unique to Minecraft.

  5. Which boss guards the central island of the End?

Answer: The Ender Dragon. Players reach the End by finding a stronghold with eyes of ender, made from ender pearls and blaze powder, and filling the portal's twelve frames. Killing the dragon triggers the credits and the End Poem, the game's only long piece of narrative text.

  6. What was Minecraft called in its very first version?

Answer: Cave Game. The earliest build had only grass and cobblestone blocks to place and remove. It was renamed Minecraft once posted on TIGSource, and Persson kept updating it based on community feedback in the Classic phase, which added multiplayer and survival mode.

  7. Which 2009 game inspired Minecraft's blocky look and building?

Answer: Infiniminer. Persson had been making RubyDung, a base-builder inspired by Dwarf Fortress with a RollerCoaster Tycoon-style view. Infiniminer, an open-ended block mining game, brought back the first-person view and blocky style, though Persson wanted to add role-playing elements.

  8. Who took over as lead developer when Persson stepped down in 2011?

Answer: Jens "Jeb" Bergensten. Persson handed over development on 1 December 2011, just after the full release. Bergensten later explained that the Pocket Edition was written in C++ rather than Java because iOS does not support Java; that code base eventually became today's Bedrock Edition.

  9. Who wrote the End Poem that appears after defeating the dragon?

Answer: Julian Gough. The Irish novelist's text runs to about 1,500 words and takes around nine minutes to scroll past. Afterwards players return to their spawn point and can keep playing indefinitely, since the game has no required goals.

  10. How did the creeper's fuse-like hiss come about?

Answer: It was a placeholder matchstick sound that was kept. Rosenfeld made it with Persson as a temporary sound, and it "seemed to work hilariously well". He made the zombies sound comical rather than scary on purpose, and said the early sound engine crashed if two songs played at once.

  11. What did C418 use to make the sound of walking on grass?

Answer: Lightly touched VHS tape. Real grass recordings did not work, so he experimented with trial-and-error Foley. His favourite sound was the spider, made by pitching a fire hose recording until it sounded "like a weird spider was talking to you".

  12. At about what distance from the world centre did the old "Far Lands" glitch begin?

Answer: Over 12 million blocks. Terrain there generated in strange wall-like patterns, and a long-running YouTube series, Far Lands or Bust, tried to walk there. The glitch was fixed, and today an impassable border sits 30 million blocks out in each direction.

  13. Which country was recreated at full scale in Minecraft by its own geodata agency in 2014?

Answer: Denmark. It worked partly because Denmark is so flat: its highest point is 171 metres, within the game's height limit at the time of about 192 metres above sea level. Minecraft has also been used with UN Habitat to let residents redesign public spaces, starting in Kibera, Nairobi.

  14. What was the cancelled Lego version of Minecraft called?

Answer: Brickcraft. Persson's early version was codenamed "Project Rex Kwon Do", after a Napoleon Dynamite character. Lego approved it and Mojang spent six months on it, but it was cancelled over Lego's demands. A 2012 build surfaced on a community archive in 2025.

  15. Why did Persson cancel plans for an Oculus Rift version?

Answer: Facebook bought Oculus, and he said "Facebook creeps me out". Fans then added VR through mods such as Minecraft VR and Vivecraft. In 2016 Microsoft added official Rift support to the Windows 10 Edition, and PlayStation VR support followed in 2020 before ending in 2025.

  16. Which organisation built an "Uncensored Library" inside Minecraft?

Answer: Reporters Without Borders. It holds journalism from countries including Egypt, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam, some by writers who were censored or arrested, such as Jamal Khashoggi. A team of 24 people spent about 250 hours building its neoclassical building.

  17. Which mob won the boycotted 2023 Mob Vote?

Answer: The armadillo. A petition asking Mojang to add all three mobs gathered about 445,000 signatures, alongside tongue-in-cheek propaganda-style posters calling for a boycott. The vote went ahead anyway, and in 2024 Mojang retired the Mob Vote.

  18. What made the Raspberry Pi Edition popular for teaching?

Answer: A built-in programming interface that works with languages like Python. Its API let students write code that changed the world in real time, though the edition only had Creative mode and never got updates. Separately, Microsoft and Code.org's Minecraft coding activities had been used by more than 85 million children by 2018.

  19. In December 2021, total views of Minecraft-related videos on YouTube passed what figure?

Answer: One trillion. YouTube creators such as The Yogscast and CaptainSparklez helped spread the game, and a study found a third of players learned about it from online videos. In 2014 "Minecraft" was the second most-searched term on all of YouTube.

  20. Where was the first full Minecon held in 2011?

Answer: Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas. It coincided with the game's official launch and included a keynote by Persson and building and costume contests. The last in-person Minecon was in 2016; it then became the online Minecon Earth and later Minecraft Live.

About the Minecraft quiz

Minecraft has sold more than 400 million copies, but very few players know where it came from. It began as a one-person side project called Cave Game, borrowed its look from another indie game and got its sound effects from a musician working with whatever was at hand. Since then it has been used to rebuild a whole country, sidestep censorship and teach programming. Those stories make a better quiz than crafting recipes.

Questions cover survival and creative play — crafting recipes, mobs like creepers and the Ender Dragon, biomes, ores, redstone, and the Nether and the End dimensions.

What this Minecraft quiz covers

Instead of crafting recipes, this quiz covers the real story of Minecraft: Notch's side projects and the games that inspired it, the Cave Game beginnings, the $2.5 billion sale, C418's homemade sound effects, the End Poem, the Far Lands, the cancelled Lego and VR versions, the Mob Vote and the ways schools, cities and journalists have used the game. Each answer below explains the story behind it and links to the source.
